I’m a dreamer and a scientist. I see beyond boundaries then return to get facts. Then, I dream again….

Founder Detina Zalli

Detina’s fascinating life story originated in Albania where in her early teens she and her twin sister guided their family abroad to escape a vicious civil war. From this emotionally charged scenario Detina (and sister) continued their education in the UK, subsequently matriculating to world class universities and each earning a PhD.

Detina’s academic and professional journey saw her study and work at University of Leicester, Harvard University, University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. Academically her studies and publications centered around cell biology, genomics and precision medicine.

She has held roles as Academic Director for Pre-Medical Studies, University of Cambridge; Director of Advanced Graduate Preclinical and Clinical Research and Director of the Biotech Journal Club at Harvard Medical School; Chair of the Harvard Lectures That Last series and the Harvard Leadership Conference; and Academic Lead for the MSc in Precision Cancer Medicine, University of Oxford.

Detina’s interests are well expressed in the Afer*Nova mission, along with her desire to study and promote leadership, creativity and happiness.

The First McGuffey Reader

Co-Founder - Thomas Drake McGuffey

Tom’s great-great grandfather and his brother were the authors of The McGuffey Readers, a renowned series of schoolbooks that significantly influenced the American educational system from the 1830s onward. His 3-great grandfather, Dr. Daniel Drake, was known as the Pioneer Physician of the West (Ohio and Kentucky). Drake authored over a dozen books on medicine, science, the environment, and society. He was also recognized as the first American born in the West to become a trained physician.

Tom’s academic background includes undergraduate studies in Computer Science, with minors in math business, classical civilizations and literature. He did graduate study in management at Rice University’s Jones School of Business Administration. Later, he received diplomas from the University of Cambridge in English Literature and Literary Criticism.

Tom’s professional journey involved working in IT as an executive or consultant for several notable companies, including AT&T Bell Laboratories, Cap Gemini, Waste Management, PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), and the fast-growing Quanta Services.

Tom’s interest in genomics and cell biology stems from his  experience as a stage IV cancer patient. His curiosity led him to explore the science of cancer more deeply and in turn, seek to make a difference in medical education, as done by his famous ancestors.

The best things in life are those you least expected.
